Exhibited at ‘Interiors’ at Persistence Works Sheffield 22nd June to 9th July 2004, and at 'Consumi’ at BBC Radio Sheffield May 2004
This series builds on the ‘Kitchen Scenes’ exhibited at ‘Suspended’ & at ‘Dialogues and Disclosures’ but uses Spanish goods to echo the strong tradition of still life in Spain through the work of Velasquez and Zubaran.
Again, the objects are arranged in the manner of a classic still life, but this time the goods themselves have been consumed, leaving only the packaging. This serves to emphasise, not only the degree of waste involved in modern consumption, but also the powerful allure of the packaging and the influence of marketing on us as consumers.
The removal of the contents places the focus directly on the packaging, thereby exposing the role of packaging in our relationship with the product, the interface between necessity and desire, moderation and greed.
